- Dolphin-like cetacean - Small whale - Type of dolphin - Any small cetacean of the genus Phocaena, especially P.
communis, or P. phocaena, of Europe, and the closely allied American
species (P. Americana). The color is dusky or blackish above, paler
beneath. They are closely allied to the dolphins, but have a shorter
snout. Called also harbor porpoise, herring hag, puffing pig, and
snuffer. - A true dolphin (Delphinus); -- often so called by
sailors.
- A small kind of whale, of the genus Globicephalus, of
several species. The most common is G. melas. Also sometimes applied to
other whales of larger size. - The tautog of New England (Tautoga). - The black sea bass (Centropristis atrarius) of the
Atlantic coast. It is excellent food fish; -- locally called also black
Harry. - A fish of southern Europe (Centrolophus pompilus) of the
Mackerel family. - The female salmon in the spawning season.
- A division of amphipod Crustacea, in which the
abdomen is small or rudimentary and the legs are often reduced to five
pairs. The whale louse, or Cyamus, and Caprella are examples.
