- A small duck (Charitonetta albeola); the spirit duck, or
butterball. The head of the male is covered with numerous elongated
feathers, and thus appears large. Called also bufflehead.
- A northern duck (Dafila acuta), native of both continents.
The adult male has a long, tapering tail. Called also gray duck,
piketail, piket-tail, spike-tail, split-tail, springtail, sea pheasant,
and gray widgeon.

shovel-nosed duck (S. rhynchotis), is a similar species.
