halibut, and other flatfishes. - A lake whitefish (Coregonus quadrilateralis), less
compressed than the common species. It is very abundant in British
America and Alaska.

European coast, and less common on the American. The name is applied

- A genus of extinct herbivorous mammals, abundant in the
Tertiary formation of the Rocky Mountains. It is more or less related
to the camel, hog, and deer.
- Any one of several species of food fishes of the
Herring family. The American species (Clupea sapidissima), which is
abundant on the Atlantic coast and ascends the larger rivers in spring
to spawn, is an important market fish. The European allice shad, or
alose (C. alosa), and the twaite shad. (C. finta), are less important
species.
