- A suborder of lophobranch fishes which have an
elongated snout and lack the ventral and first dorsal fins. The
pipefishes and sea horses are examples.
- Any one of several species of large, elongated, marine
fishes of the genus Cryptacanthodes, especially C. maculatus of the
American coast. A whitish variety is called ghostfish.
- One of a family (Lernaeidae) of parasitic Crustacea found
attached to fishes and other marine animals. Some species penetrate the
skin and flesh with the elongated head, and feed on the viscera. See
Illust. in Appendix.
- Any one of several species of elasmobranch fishes of the
genus Pristis. They have a sharklike form, but are more nearly allied
to the rays. The flattened and much elongated snout has a row of stout
toothlike structures inserted along each edge, forming a sawlike organ
with which it mutilates or kills its prey.
