- The eighth part of a circle; an arc of 45 degrees. - The position or aspect of a heavenly body, as the moon or a
planet, when half way between conjunction, or opposition, and
quadrature, or distant from another body 45 degrees. - An instrument for measuring angles (generally called a
quadrant), having an arc which measures up to 9O¡, but being itself the
eighth part of a circle. Cf. Sextant. - One of the eight parts into which a space is divided by
three coordinate planes.
- One of the two points of an orbit, as of a planet or
satellite, which are at the greatest and least distance from the
central body, corresponding to the aphelion and perihelion of a planet,
or to the apogee and perigee of the moon. The more distant is called
the higher apsis; the other, the lower apsis; and the line joining
them, the line of apsides. - In a curve referred to polar coordinates, any point for
which the radius vector is a maximum or minimum. - Same as Apse.
