- A genus of coleopterous insects, the larvae of which
feed animal substances. They are very destructive to dries meats,
skins, woolens, and furs. The most common species is D. lardarius,
known as the bacon beetle.
- A genus of small beetles, several of which, in the
larval state, are very destructive to woolen goods, fur, etc. The
common "museum pest" is A. varius; the carpet beetle is A.
scrophulariae. The larvae are commonly confounded with moths.
- A yellowish beetle (Doryphora decemlineata), with
ten longitudinal, black, dorsal stripes. It has migrated eastwards from
its original habitat in Colorado, and is very destructive to the potato
plant; -- called also potato beetle and potato bug. See Potato beetle.
- A division of beetles, including a large number of
species, in which the antennae are very long. Most of them, while in
the larval state, bore into the wood or beneath the bark of trees, and
some species are very destructive to fruit and shade trees. See Apple
