Prostitution is basically illegal for the same reason that drugs and gambling are illegal (in most places, etc. etc.) – because of all the shady criminal activity that goes along with them, as well as the fact that vice industries tend to prey on the poor. I’m sure morality plays a big part in the matter, too, but there are definitely pragmatic reasons there, whether you agree with them or not.

Personally, I tend to think that you’d be less likely to have all of that criminal enterprise if you legalized the subject in question and regulated it heavily, but I honestly have no idea what to do about the “preying on the poor” side of the equation. Shrug and say, “well, that’s freedom!” I guess. By default, when you make an activity illegal, those who engage in it are, by definition, criminals.
