- Cuticle - Outer layer of skin - Skin layer - The outer, nonsensitive layer of the skin; cuticle;
scarfskin. See Dermis. - The outermost layer of the cells, which covers both
surfaces of leaves, and also the surface of stems, when they are first
formed. As stems grow old this layer is lost, and never replaced.
- The outer layer of the blastoderm; epiblast. - The external skin or outer layer of an animal or plant,
this being formed in an animal from the epiblast. See Illust. of
Blastoderm.
- Dark pigment in hair and skin - A black pigment found in the pigment-bearing cells of the
skin (particularly in the skin of the negro), in the epithelial cells
of the external layer of the retina (then called fuscin), in the outer
layer of the choroid, and elsewhere. It is supposed to be derived from
the decomposition of hemoglobin.
