- Metallic element, Sr - A metallic element of the calcium group, always
naturally occurring combined, as in the minerals strontianite,
celestite, etc. It is isolated as a yellowish metal, somewhat malleable
but harder than calcium. It is chiefly employed (as in the nitrate) to
color pyrotechnic flames red. Symbol Sr. Atomic weight 87.3. - A radioactive isotope of strontium produced by certain
nuclear reactions, and constituting one of the prominent harmful
components of radioactive fallout from nuclear explosions; also called
radiostrontium. It has a half-life of 28 years.
- Metallic element - Silvery-white element - A rare metallic element, discovered in certain ores of
zinc, by means of its characteristic spectrum of two indigo blue lines;
hence, its name. In appearance it resembles zinc, being white or lead
gray, soft, malleable and easily fusible, but in its chemical relation
it resembles aluminium or gallium. Symbol In. Atomic weight, 113.4.
- Metal, Ti - Metallic element - An elementary substance found combined in the minerals
manaccanite, rutile, sphene, etc., and isolated as an infusible
iron-gray amorphous powder, having a metallic luster. It burns when
heated in the air. Symbol Ti. Atomic weight 48.1.
- Chemical element - Element that makes up diamonds - Element with symbol C - Non metallic element - Non-metallic element - Nonmetallic element - An elementary substance, not metallic in its nature, which
is present in all organic compounds. Atomic weight 11.97. Symbol C. it
is combustible, and forms the base of lampblack and charcoal, and
enters largely into mineral coals. In its pure crystallized state it
constitutes the diamond, the hardest of known substances, occuring in
monometric crystals like the octahedron, etc. Another modification is
graphite, or blacklead, and in this it is soft, and occurs in hexagonal
prisms or tables. When united with oxygen it forms carbon dioxide,
commonly called carbonic acid, or carbonic oxide, according to the
proportions of the oxygen; when united with hydrogen, it forms various
compounds called hydrocarbons. Compare Diamond, and Graphite.
- Element with symbol Ba - Metallic element - Silvery-white element - Silvery-White Metallic Element - Soft silvery-white element - One of the elements, belonging to the alkaline earth group;
a metal having a silver-white color, and melting at a very high
temperature. It is difficult to obtain the pure metal, from the
facility with which it becomes oxidized in the air. Atomic weight, 137.
Symbol, Ba. Its oxide called baryta.
- Bluish-white metal - Chemist's Sb - Metallic element - An elementary substance, resembling a metal in its
appearance and physical properties, but in its chemical relations
belonging to the class of nonmetallic substances. Atomic weight, 120.
Symbol, Sb.
- Am able to get to centre of volcanoes - Be able to - Container - First container, airtight naturally - Food tin - Half of Tuscan food container - Hot potato, ... of worms
- Metallic element - A rare metallic element associated with several other rare
elements in the mineral gadolinite from Ytterby in Sweden. Symbol Er.
Atomic weight 165.9. Its salts are rose-colored and give characteristic
spectra. Its sesquioxide is called erbia.
