- See Assuage. - A tool, variously shaped or grooved on the end or face, used
by blacksmiths and other workers in metals, for shaping their work,
whether sheet metal or forging, by holding the swage upon the work, or
the work upon the swage, and striking with a sledge. - To shape by means of a swage; to fashion, as a piece of
iron, by forcing it into a groove or mold having the required shape.
- A diseased condition, produced by the absorption of lead,
common among workers in this metal or in its compounds, as among
painters, typesetters, etc. It is characterized by various symptoms, as
lead colic, lead line, and wrist drop. See under Colic, Lead, and
Wrist.
- The cutting tool of an engraver on metal, used in line
engraving. It is made of tempered steel, one end being ground off
obliquely so as to produce a sharp point, and the other end inserted in
a handle; a graver; also, the similarly shaped tool used by workers in
marble. - The manner or style of execution of an engraver; as, a soft
burin; a brilliant burin.
