often growing in dense tufts in marshy places. They have triangular
jointless stems, a spiked inflorescence, and long grasslike leaves
which are usually rough on the margins and midrib. There are several
hundred species. - A flock of herons.

bitter leaves, sometimes used in medicine; marsh trefoil; -- called
also bog bean.

also, the plant producing it (several species of Vaccinum or
Oxycoccus.) The high cranberry or cranberry tree is a species of
Viburnum (V. Opulus), and the other is sometimes called low cranberry
or marsh cranberry to distinguish it.
