- A scroll. - A long strip or scroll resembling a ribbon or a band of
parchment, or the like, anciently placed above the shield, and
supporting the crest. - In modern heraldry, a similar ribbon on which the motto is
inscribed.
- A beautiful South American humming bird (Gouldia
Popelairii), having the six outer tail feathers long, slender, and
pointed. The head is ornamented with a long, pointed crest.
- A long-tailed monkey (Semnopitchecus melalophus) native of
Sumatra. It has a crest of black hair. The forehead and cheeks are fawn
color, the upper parts tawny and red, the under parts white. Called
also black-crested monkey, and sinpae.
