- Cattle breed - A bovine mammal (Ros Indicus) extensively domesticated in
India, China, the East Indies, and East Africa. It usually has short
horns, large pendulous ears, slender legs, a large dewlap, and a large,
prominent hump over the shoulders; but these characters vary in
different domestic breeds, which range in size from that of the common
ox to that of a large mastiff.
- Huge African mammal - Pachyderm - A large, amphibious, herbivorous mammal (Hippopotamus
amphibius), common in the rivers of Africa. It is allied to the hogs,
and has a very thick, naked skin, a thick and square head, a very large
muzzle, small eyes and ears, thick and heavy body, and short legs. It
is supposed to be the behemoth of the Bible. Called also zeekoe, and
river horse. A smaller species (H. Liberiencis) inhabits Western
Africa.
