priestcap. - A swallow-tailed coat. - An arrow.
- One of a genus (Calochortus) of tuliplike bulbous
herbs with large, and often gaycolored, blossoms. Called also butterfly
lily. Most of them are natives of California.
- A large, handsome American butterfly (Euph/ades, /
Papilio, troilus). It is black, with yellow marginal spots on the front
wings, and blue spots on the rear wings.
- Sovereign's representative - The governor of a country or province who rules in the
name of the sovereign with regal authority, as the king's substitute;
as, the viceroy of India. - A large and handsome American butterfly (Basilarchia, /
Limenitis, archippus). Its wings are orange-red, with black lines along
the nervures and a row of white spots along the outer margins. The
larvae feed on willow, poplar, and apple trees.
- A common, large, handsome, American swallowtail butterfly,
now regarded as one of the forms of Papilio, / Jasoniades, glaucus. The
wings are yellow, margined and barred with black, and with an
orange-red spot near the posterior angle of the hind wings. Called also
tiger swallowtail. See Illust. under Swallowtail.
