- A genus of insects belonging to the order Hemiptera and
family Aphidae, including numerous species known as plant lice and
green flies.
- A beetle (Lytta, / Cantharis, vesicatoria), havin1g an
elongated cylindrical body of a brilliant green color, and a nauseous
odor; the blister fly or blister beetle, of the apothecary; -- also
called Spanish fly. Many other species of Lytta, used for the same
purpose, take the same name. See Blister beetle, under Blister. The
plural form in usually applied to the dried insects used in medicine.
- Any moth of the family Sphingidae, of which there are
numerous genera and species. They are large, handsome moths, which fly
mostly at twilight and hover about flowers like a humming bird, sucking
the honey by means of a long, slender proboscis. The larvae are large,
hairless caterpillars ornamented with green and other bright colors,
