- Glossy bird - Small Bird - Small migratory bird - Any passerine bird belonging to Sturnus and allied
genera. The European starling (Sturnus vulgaris) is dark brown or
greenish black, with a metallic gloss, and spotted with yellowish
white. It is a sociable bird, and builds about houses, old towers, etc.
Called also stare, and starred. The pied starling of India is
Sternopastor contra. - A California fish; the rock trout. - A structure of piles driven round the piers of a bridge
for protection and support; -- called also sterling.
- A small crested passerine bird (Phainopepla nitens),
native of Mexico and the Southern United States. The adult male is of a
uniform glossy blue-black; the female is brownish. Called also black
flycatcher.
- A bird of Madagascar (Leptosomus discolor), the only
living type of a family allied to the rollers. It has a pair of loral
plumes. The male is glossy green above, with metallic reflections; the
female is spotted with brown and black.
- A saxicoline singing bird (Kittacincla macroura) of India,
noted for the sweetness and power of its song. In confinement it
imitates the notes of other birds and various animals with accuracy.
Its head, neck, back, breast, and tail are glossy black, the rump
white, the under parts chestnut.
