- Diver used by plumber - Diver’s lung embraced by uplifted rep - Drain clearing device - Force pump - Syringe - One who, or that which, plunges; a diver. - A long solid cylinder, used, instead of a piston or
bucket, as a forcer in pumps.
- One who, or that which, forces or drives. - The solid piston of a force pump; the instrument by which
water is forced in a pump. - A small hand pump for sinking pits, draining cellars, etc.
- A kind of pump for exhausting air from a vessel or closed
space; also, a pump to condense air or force it into a closed space. - A pump used to exhaust from a condenser the condensed
steam, the water used for condensing, and any commingled air.
- Having simplicity of action; especially (Mach.),
acting or exerting force during strokes in one direction only; -- said
of a reciprocating engine, pump, etc.
- A kind of gun in which the elastic force of condensed air is
used to discharge the ball. The air is powerfully compressed into a
reservoir attached to the gun, by a condensing pump, and is controlled
by a valve actuated by the trigger.
- An instrument for measuring the tension or elastic force
of gases, steam, etc., constructed usually on the principle of allowing
the gas to exert its elastic force in raising a column of mercury in an
open tube, or in compressing a portion of air or other gas in a closed
tube with mercury or other liquid intervening, or in bending a metallic
or other spring so as to set in motion an index; a pressure gauge. See
Pressure, and Illust. of Air pump.
