- Flower ovary - Flower part - Plant organ - An epistle. - The seed-bearing organ of a flower. It consists of an
ovary, containing the ovules or rudimentary seeds, and a stigma, which
is commonly raised on an elongated portion called a style. When
composed of one carpel a pistil is simple; when composed of several, it
is compound. See Illust. of Flower, and Ovary.
- The pedicel raising the pistil or ovary above the
stamens, as in the passion flower. - One of the branches bearing the female gonophores, in
certain Siphonophora.
- Swinging freely - Depending; pendent loosely; hanging; swinging. - Wavering; unstable; doubtful. - Inclined or hanging downwards, as a flower on a recurved
stalk, or an ovule which hangs from the upper part of the ovary.
- Container - That which serves, or is used, for receiving and
containing something, as a basket, a vase, a bag, a reservoir; a
repository. - The apex of the flower stalk, from which the organs of
the flower grow, or into which they are inserted. See Illust. of
Flower, and Ovary. - The dilated apex of a pedicel which serves as a common
support to a head of flowers. - An intercellular cavity containing oil or resin or
other matters. - A special branch which bears the fructification in many
cryptogamous plants.
