- extinct wild cattle - A very large, powerful, and savage extinct bovine animal (Bos
urus / primigenius) anciently abundant in Europe. It appears to have
still existed in the time of Julius Caesar. It had very large horns,
and was hardly capable of domestication. Called also, ur, ure, and tur.
- extinct wild oxen - The European bison (Bison bonasus, / Europaeus), once
widely distributed, but now nearly extinct, except where protected in
the Lithuanian forests, and perhaps in the Caucasus. It is distinct
from the Urus of Caesar, with which it has often been confused.
