- Brilliant red pigment - Vivid red - Vivid red colour - A bright red pigment consisting of mercuric sulphide,
obtained either from the mineral cinnabar or artificially. It has a
fine red color, and is much used in coloring sealing wax, in printing,
etc. - Hence, a red color like the pigment; a lively and
brilliant red; as, cheeks of vermilion. - To color with vermilion, or as if with vermilion; to
dye red; to cover with a delicate red.
- A heavy, brilliant red pigment, consisting of an oxide of
lead, Pb3O4, obtained by exposing lead or massicot to a gentle and
continued heat in the air. It is used as a cement, as a paint, and in
the manufacture of flint glass. Called also red lead.
- Bright red - Bright red colour - Purplish red - Red pigment - A rich red or crimson color with a shade of purple. - A beautiful pigment, or a lake, of this color, prepared
from cochineal, and used in miniature painting. - The essential coloring principle of cochineal, extracted
as a purple-red amorphous mass. It is a glucoside and possesses acid
properties; -- hence called also carminic acid.
