- A board on which a game is played, by pushing or
driving pieces of metal or money to reach certain marks; also, the game
itself. Called also shuffleboard, shoveboard, shovegroat, shovelpenny. - A game played on board ship in which the aim is to
shove or drive with a cue wooden disks into divisions chalked on the
deck; -- called also shuffleboard.
- Board game - A game of chance and skill, played by two persons on a
"board" marked off into twenty-four spaces called "points". Each player
has fifteen pieces, or "men", the movements of which from point to
point are determined by throwing dice. Formerly called tables. - In the game of backgammon, to beat by ending the
game before the loser is clear of his first "table".
- Card game - Game for one - A person who lives in solitude; a recluse; a hermit. - A single diamond in a setting; also, sometimes, a
precious stone of any kind set alone. - A game which one person can play alone; -- applied to
many games of cards, etc.; also, to a game played on a board with pegs
or balls, in which the object is, beginning with all the places filled
except one, to remove all but one of the pieces by "jumping," as in
draughts. - A large extinct bird (Pezophaps solitaria) which
formerly inhabited the islands of Mauritius and Rodrigeuz. It was
larger and taller than the wild turkey. Its wings were too small for
flight. Called also solitary. - Any species of American thrushlike birds of the genus
Myadestes. They are noted their sweet songs and retiring habits. Called
also fly-catching thrush. A West Indian species (Myadestes sibilans) is
called the invisible bird.
- Board game - Game to show exclusive control - The exclusive power, or privilege of selling a commodity;
the exclusive power, right, or privilege of dealing in some article, or
of trading in some market; sole command of the traffic in anything,
however obtained; as, the proprietor of a patented article is given a
monopoly of its sale for a limited time; chartered trading companies
have sometimes had a monopoly of trade with remote regions; a
combination of traders may get a monopoly of a particular product. - Exclusive possession; as, a monopoly of land. - The commodity or other material thing to which the
monopoly relates; as, tobacco is a monopoly in France.
