- An American singing bird (Dolichonyx oryzivorus). The
male is black and white; the female is brown; -- called also, ricebird,
reedbird, and Boblincoln.
- An Australian insessorial bird (Corcorax melanorhamphus)
noted for the curious actions of the male during the breeding season.
It is black with a white patch on each wing.
- An Asiatic bird (Gracula musica), allied to the starlings.
It is black, with a white spot on the wings, and a pair of flat yellow
wattles on the head. It is often tamed and taught to pronounce words.
- An Australian insectivorous singing bird (Pachycephala
gutturalis). The male is conspicuously marked with black and yellow,
and has a black crescent on the breast. Called also white-throated
thickhead, orange-breasted thrust, black-crowned thrush, guttural
thrush, and black-breasted flycatcher.

- A saxicoline singing bird (Kittacincla macroura) of India,
noted for the sweetness and power of its song. In confinement it
imitates the notes of other birds and various animals with accuracy.
Its head, neck, back, breast, and tail are glossy black, the rump
white, the under parts chestnut.
- Glossy bird - Small Bird - Small migratory bird - Any passerine bird belonging to Sturnus and allied
genera. The European starling (Sturnus vulgaris) is dark brown or
greenish black, with a metallic gloss, and spotted with yellowish
white. It is a sociable bird, and builds about houses, old towers, etc.
Called also stare, and starred. The pied starling of India is
Sternopastor contra. - A California fish; the rock trout. - A structure of piles driven round the piers of a bridge
for protection and support; -- called also sterling.
- A small European singing bird (Saxicola /nanthe). The
male is white beneath, bluish gray above, with black wings and a black
stripe through each eye. The tail is black at the tip and in the
middle, but white at the base and on each side. Called also checkbird,
chickell, dykehopper, fallow chat, fallow finch, stonechat, and
whitetail.
