- A European singing bird (Emberiza hortulana), about the
size of the lark, with black wings. It is esteemed delicious food when
fattened. Called also bunting. - In England, the wheatear (Saxicola oenanthe). - In America, the sora, or Carolina rail (Porzana Carolina).

- A small singing bird of the Finch family (Serinus
Canarius), a native of the Canary Islands. It was brought to Europe in
the 16th century, and made a household pet. It generally has a
yellowish body with the wings and tail greenish, but in its wild state
it is more frequently of gray or brown color. It is sometimes called
canary finch.
- An instrument, consisting of a tube having one end
open and the other end covered with a thin flexible membrance to the
center of which is attached a small mirror. It is used for exhibiting
upon a screen, by means of rays reflected from the mirror, the
vibratory motions caused by sounds produced at the open end of the
tube, as by speaking or singing into it.
