- A medicinal substance obtained in the East Indies, having
a fragrant smell, and a warm, bitter, aromatic taste. It is used in
medicine as a stimulant.
- A gum resin exuding from the stems of certain Asiatic
umbelliferous plants, mostly species of Ferula. The Bubon Galbanum of
South Africa furnishes an inferior kind of galbanum. It has an acrid,
bitter taste, a strong, unpleasant smell, and is used for medical
purposes, also in the arts, as in the manufacture of varnish.
- The concrete juice (gum resin) of an umbelliferous
plant, the Dorema ammoniacum. It is brought chiefly from Persia in the
form of yellowish tears, which occur singly, or are aggregated into
masses. It has a peculiar smell, and a nauseous, sweet taste, followed
by a bitter one. It is inflammable, partially soluble in water and in
spirit of wine, and is used in medicine as an expectorant and
resolvent, and for the formation of certain plasters.
