- A large African wading bird (Balaeniceps rex) allied to
the storks and herons, and remarkable for its enormous broad swollen
bill. It inhabits the valley of the White Nile. See Illust. (l.) of

- A bird of the genus Anastomus, allied to the stork; -- so
called because the two parts of the bill touch only at the base and
tip. One species inhabits India, another Africa. Called also open-beak.
