Bricklayer’s cutting tool example

It would seem that William Green, master builder of Saffron Walden, had celebrated his new status by renovating his house, then in a quiet country lane, and included his importance within its brickwork. The emblem on the date-plaque depicts a builder’s ‘setting-out tool’ at the top, and a bricklayer’s cutting tool (or brick axe) at the bottom. William was the father of Elijah and Julius, both well-known local builders. Julius Green also ran the Duke of York pub at the top of the High Street and caused much local gossip in 1870 when he
married the landlady, who was his deceased wife’s step-mother. The Greens were active builders and lime-burners in the town until at least the early 1910s. It is possibly members of the Green family who were standing outside their house in the Edwardian photograph. Inset: William Green ‘s date plaque celebrating his new status as a master bricklayer.
